WW2 Winchester M1 Garand Operating Rod "Rare Unmodified no relief cut". Nice legible Drawing # and WRA stampings. This operating rod came off a functioning CMP rifle purchased in 1997 through the CMP. The rod piston measures excellent. There is no wear in on the lock up square tab on the back and fits nice with no slop. There is finish wear to the rod but no rust or pitting. This is an interesting award: it's a 1960s 70s vintage Navy Commendation Medal to a man who was a surgeon/medical officer in the US Naval Reserve (ending-up in the rank of Captain, i.e., a full colonel by Army standards). The hand engraving is especially gorgeous (see photo). I have a little background information on him (included). He was born in 1908 and died in 1997, and served in the Navy during World War Two (January 1941 to January 1946).
