This is an interesting award: it's a 1960s 70s vintage Navy Commendation Medal to a man who was a surgeon/medical officer in the US Naval Reserve (ending-up in the rank of Captain, i.e., a full colonel by Army standards). The hand engraving is especially gorgeous (see photo). I have a little background information on him (included). He was born in 1908 and died in 1997, and served in the Navy during World War Two (January 1941 to January 1946).
